Project......Commencement Dress

My middle daughter came to me an hour before we were leaving for her Commencement Ceremonies asking me "could I please alter this dress", that I made for my oldest daughter last year....... to fit her.

Lucky for me the boned bodice did not need any alterations.......I used a McCall's pattern 5850.

The hem needed 4 inches added but I did not have the same skirt fabric so she picked out this pink silky fabric from my stash to match the pink inside of the dress.

I know it seems easy just add a hem but when you are under pressure with your daughter standing there saying "come on Mom its like your on Project Runway".....not even close I tell her!

The front..........

The skirt part of the dress was my own design & I added the neon purple zipper.  I quickly added the back skirt vent.........not too bad for an hour of rush sewing.

Mirror, mirror on the wall.......

I like to get design inspiration from movies & books & my latest tank/corset style is from Snow White & The Huntsman.

I  have sewn a few inspiration garments like my:

Red Riding Cape,

& my Snow White Cape

When I heard about the making of the movie Snow White & The Huntsman I was thrilled as I like these dark fairy tales!  I saw a few previews & the costumes looked dark, edgy & modern.  I came up with this modern tank that looks like a corset from a Canadian designer that I saw in a boutique for $150.00. Skirt was made by me last year.

I used a combination of a Simplicity pattern for the bodice & the style from this book Sweet Nothings.

The fabric is a cotton polyester blend that I got on sale for $5.00 a meter & a package of black ribbon bias tape & that was all I needed for this project.

A little peak in my new sewing room.
